Interior Design: The Art of Clashing

Shag Interior HOW TO: Clashing

Source: blog.thony.com.br

Arguably one of the hardest interior design techniques to get right, clashing is a brave choice, but when done right the results are bold, eye-catching curations that compliment, not overwhelm.

As a maximalist I LOVE to clash… whether in my own home interiors or my dress sense. I love to throw together a few different patterns, colours and textures and create spaces and outfits that are visually interesting… or, “looking like I’ve done a cartwheel through Dunelm”, as my fiance would say.

Now, you can read design books, study the science of colour or search Google for the rules of clashing, but I think it simply comes down to a few basic things:

  • Sizing

When it comes to prints, try clashing with different sizes. What I mean by this is by having lots of loud designs all in one place causes them to compete for your eye rather than compliment the one another. Take a smaller, animal print under a larger, floral one for instance. It works, they both allow the other one to breathe and look really good together. Source: spoonflower.com

  • Juxtaposition
I like to clash completely opposing prints/textures. Why? It’s true what they say, opposites attract! And not only that, there’s often something so delightful in this technique. Tough leather upholstery softened with fuzzy cushions.. textured wallpaper clad with artwork.. Minton tiles sitting beneath a cotton candy pink front door.. Juxtaposing styles officially work.

  • Tone
Picking two colours to clash together could lead to a design disaster.. think about the tone of the colour and the mood you are trying to create. We all know that primary red and bright green look

pretty awful together. But have you tried a Mulberry with an Olive? Now that’s a cute clash. Colour-clashing is way more mainstream now than it used to be, just look at how red and pink are often seen together. If you’re new to mixing colours then try out these combos and see if any tickle your fancy:

    Sea green & light pink

    Blue and brown

    Orange and pink

Another colour-clash trick it to mix two tones of the same colour, it’s a safer option for those just wanting to dip their toe in to the world of clashing and can bring a subtle clash to an otherwise minimalist/neutral space.

  • Texture

It’s not just prints and colours that make for magnificent clashing.. I love to mix up the textures in a home, particularly with natural materials to create cosy atmospheres. Wooden beams, exposed brick, fluffy sheepskins and industrial-style metals are a good example of how mixing up textures in your space can drastically impact it in the best way. And you don’t have to go overboard and start installing beams to achieve this clash either. Try simple linen bedding offset with a glamorous, velvet throw; or rattan light shades hanging from a dark-painted ceiling.

If you follow these rough guidelines I guarantee you you’ll start to figure out your own maximalist style and how clashing can work for you. It’s easy to master once you’ve got an eye for it so go and have fun, and don’t forget to tag me in your pics!

Although I’ve set out some ‘rules’ to follow the main thing to remember is interior style is personal and subjective, so have fun creating spaces that make you HAPPY!

2024 Design Trend Series: Western Gothic

2024 Trend Series: Western Gothic

As someone who loathes the notion of trends I was hesitant about putting together this trend series for you.. but then I realised at some point my home style was a trend and I am still obsessed with my choices, so stick to a style you truly love & you’ll never go out of fashion.

  1. Western Gothic

My prayers have been answered.. finally we are seeing a fusion of two styles which are, in my opinion, independently a little bit immature. But together, oh my, do they look goooooood!

Dark walls, floors, ceilings and soft furnishings are broken up with raw wood, animal hides, brown leather and cacti plants. This is the marriage to beat guys. It’s like Clint and Morticia hooked up and went into interiors together.

5 Ways to Create a Cosy Home

Yes candles and throws are the obvious way to make your home more cosy but here’s a list of 5 other tricks to create a soft, inviting and comfy environment without breaking the bank…

  • Mix Up the Texture 🧶
Allowing different textures to live cohesively in one space will instantly bring a depth to your rooms that creates a cosy, welcoming space.

  • Lighting is EVERYTHING 💡
You’ve heard me say it before and you’ll hear me say it again:

    You👏🏼Can👏🏼Never👏🏼Have👏🏼Too👏🏼Many👏🏼Lamps👏🏼

Play around with different bulb wattage, filaments and colours. And for the love of God avoid white light unless your idea of ‘cosy and relaxing’ is Patrick Bateman’s apartment.

  • Fill the Space 🪴
Consider using vases, a stack of magazines, empty wine bottles as candlesticks or pottery to make your space feel lived in and warm.

  • Introduce Colour 🎨
If your space is feeling a little 2-dimensional it may be that your palette isn’t varied enough. You don’t need to go full-out-maximalist here, just add splashes of colour with cushions, artwork and plants to create a homely environment you’ll never want to leave.

  • Don’t Forget Your Tribe 🐶
Framed photos of your nearest and dearest are the quickest way to inject some fuzzy-feels into your home. Vary the sizes, styles and colours of the frames for bonus points.

The Ultimate Guide to Gallery Walls

The Ultimate Guide to Gallery Walls

Gallery walls can be a show-stopper when done right, the hard bit is figuring out exactly how to execute correctly without it feeling like you’re sat in the middle of Nando’s.

Well I’m here to help you out with some DO’s and DON’T’s when it comes to styling a gallery wall to suit your taste.

If you have a gallery wall in your home let me know in the comments what you’d add to this list!

DO CHOOSE YOUR SPACE WISELY

Choosing a space for your gallery is the first task. Gallery walls generally look brilliant in unsuspecting places like staircases, cloakrooms and snugs, but they can equally look great in open-plan spaces if you have enough art! Avoid aimlessly plonking stuff in the middle of a wall, instead focus on creating an interesting shape that includes other elements such as doors, windows and shelves. This will make the room look more expansive and draw the eye across it rather than centering the focus in the middle of an empty space.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO GO BIG

Gallery walls lend themselves well to lots of colour, texture and size variations. Think of an actual gallery and apply the same concept to your space - it’s perfectly fine to showcase contrasting art in one place. One of my favourite things about the gallery walls in my home are the vast contrast in styles. We have everything from graphite portraits to tattoo art to watercolour nudie pics to vintage magazine cigarette adverts - and everything in between! Using an assortment of frames is key here too if you are looking to achieve the full maximalism look.

DO BE DELIBERATE

Be deliberate with your placement choice. If you like symmetry then go for it, if you don’t make sure you’re deliberately asymmetrical.. either way commit to your choice to avoid weird, dead space that is offensive to the eye. Avoid big gaps with straight lines like the photo on the left here, it just looks awkward. If you're going for symmetry then measure or use a laser for precision.

DON'T FORGET THE CLASSICS

Equally spaced, identical frames, all in black and white and against a plain backdrop is a beautifully stylish way to present a gallery wall. This works really well with black and white family photos and it's s a go-to design that I use for a lot of my clients in new builds whose homes lack a bit of personalty. It's a lovely way to bring some identity and values into their space whilst still maintaining the overall contemporary look of their home.

DO SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS

Love the idea of a gallery wall but don’t know where to start looking for pieces? Head to your local artisan market or hit up that friend you know that does art...not only will you be supporting real talent you’ll also have an authentic conversation piece hanging proudly on your wall. This piece pictured here is by BornStokie - an artist whose trademark style has seen her wor featured in exhibitions around the world!
